Fireworks show in the sky over Malta
The Malta International Fireworks Festival, a delight for guests and citizens of the sunny island of Malta, was held for the seventeenth time this year. The very first festival was organized in May 2004 to commemorate Malta’s entry to the European Union. This tradition has strengthened since then, and every time spectators are surprised by something unusual.
This year’s festival was most outstanding. The chosen theme for this edition, ‘Where Fire and Culture Meet’, highlights the fact that Valletta is the European Capital of Culture in 2018.
The opening of the festival took place on Saturday, April 21, in Xagħra, Gozo. Just imagine a clear starry night, impressive landscapes and millions of bright fireworks designed by Phoenix Fireworks Ltd (United Kingdom) and Rozzi Fireworks (USA)! It was possible to enjoy another fireworks show on Friday, April 27, in Marsaxlokk, where participants from Malta and Italy – Martarello S.r.l (Italy) and St. Mary Fireworks Factory (Ħal Għaxaq, Malta) –presented a flamboyant show to the accompaniment of the local band Madonna ta’ Pompei, which was performing on the central stage.
On a side note, it should be noted that St. Mary fireworks Factory was the winner of the Fireworks Festival in 2010 and 2016.
The grand finale took place on Monday, April 30, and it was not like any other pyrotechnic show. Spectators were enjoying fireworks synchronized with live singing and music played by an orchestra.
They were performing music written specially for the festival from a floating stage in the majestic Grand Harbour, Valletta.
DVDs with the spectacular shows are available for connoisseurs and collectors. They can be purchased from the organisers of the Fireworks Festival – the Ministry for Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority.
